Soma Singh

28 March 2014

As many of you will already know Soma Singh our Mens 1st XI Coach has decided to step down after 5 magnificent years at the helm.

Soma signed up with a 5 year plan to get Richmond HC back into the National League a target that seemed well beyond us at that initial meeting back in 2009 when our 1st XI had been relegated down to Hants/Surrey Division 1 some 3 promotions away from the National League.

What followed will live long in the memories and record books of our great club and with 3 successive promotions we were back in the National League 2 years ahead of schedule with our 1st XI being named Team of the Season and Soma Club Coach of the season at the EHB Awards in 2012. Retaining our place in the National League this year for a 2nd season is probably a more satisfying albeit less headline grabbing achievement which puts in fine fettle to move forward into the next phase of our development.Soma

We have been tested by Soma every step of the way on this journey as he constantly pushes us all in the pursuit of excellence and he leaves the Club in a far stronger position than we could have imagined at the time of his initial appointment. We will be reminding ourselves of this drive and determination as we move forward and seek continued successes.  We should all be grateful for the leading role Soma has had in this journey with support from his 1st XI Managers Rob Green and Ben Blake and Captains Josh Smith and Charlie Duffell.Soma Singh 11

Soma during the past 5 years has moved out to Lord Wandsworth College in Hook initially as Head of Hockey and now as Head of Sport which places huge demands on his time and he informed the Club at the start of this season that he would not be seeking an extension to his rolling contract – a decision which the Club entirely respects and accepts with a heavy heart.

We wish Soma, Rachael and Tali all the very best for their future together and you will all be welcome back at Richmond any time.

We will be planning a social event for all Club members past and present who played under Soma during his time over the Summer as a way to express our appreciation for all his hard work and success.

Soma has asked for the following message to be posted on our website :

“After 5 wonderful years I have decided to step back and spend sometime with my wife Rachel and our 4 year old boy Tali.

Its never an easy decision to take but I know the club and players will appreciate I will never get that time back with my son or my wife.

I would like to thank all the players and management who I have had the pleasure of working with during these last 5 years. It has been a great journey.

I wish the club and players all the best going forward . I  have no doubt i will see you on the sidelines next year in the national league.

I will always hold the club close and you never know maybe I will be  back sometime in the future. Best wishes

Planning is already well advanced with regards to appointing a successor and the management team are currently interviewing a number of candidates with a view to updating Club Members within the coming weeks.
