Richmond Hockey Club is delighted to announce that Mark Pearn will be joining Gareth Carr, Ben Blake and the Men’s Elite group as Assistant Coach/Player ahead of the 2015/16 season. Mark joins Richmond after a hugely successful period with East Grinstead and brings a wealth of experience with over 150 England and almost 90 Great Britain caps.We caught up with Mark, Gareth and Men’s Club Captain Andrew to get their reactions…..
Andrew Denye: Men’s Club Captain.
“We have had an amazing few years following the creation of our original 5 year plan with Soma which resulted in us returning the National League 3 years ago and with Gareth Carr coming on board last season we have the opportunity to build a new programme to enter the next phase of our development as a team and a Club. The first step in that is bringing Mark on board and with his wealth of experience I know he will add huge benefit to the group in terms of coaching and playing know-how and also in mentoring our younger players. As a player and a person it’s fair to say that opportunities like Mark Pearn do not come along too often so I simply cannot wait to start working with him ahead of our pre-season. It should be an exciting period for the Club with our Ladies 1st XI and 2nd XI gaining promotion last season there is a real buzz about the place so there is no better time to get involved and be part of our own hockey family.”
Gareth Carr: First XI Coach.
“I am thrilled that Mark has agreed to get involved with our current project at RHC. He will be a perfect fit for our men’s 1stXl and will bring unrivalled experience and leadership to a squad that already has some very talented young players. It is also a clear statement by the club of the direction we want to be moving in the next few seasons.
Mark and I have worked closely together for the past six years both on the pitch at EG and as a coaching team at Wellington College and I have no doubt that he will have a positive impact on the squad and club both on and off the pitch. Truth be told I am envious of the players that are going to be playing with him week in week out.
With the confirmed addition of other players to the squad as well continuing to work hard to bring in further key targets we will have far more competition within the team. This will be very positive for us going forwards and I am excited to start working with the new playing group and being extremely competitive in the coming season.”
Mark Pearn : First XI Assistant Player Coach.
“I am delighted to have the opportunity to continue my hockey career at Richmond Hockey Club and to assist them with the next stage of their exciting journey. I am really looking forward to joining another fantastic family club with an amazingly rich history and I have no doubt that I will be made to feel very welcome.
Having coached Gareth at East Grinstead and also working closely with him for six years at Wellington College I know how passionate he is and the high aspirations he has for the team and club going forwards. When he knew I was stepping down after ten years at EG he asked if I would consider coming to play and assist him at RHC.
The opportunity to continue playing at a very competitive level whilst helping Gareth develop the team, take on a mentoring role with some of the junior academy players and supporting the talented young players already in the squad, was all something that really appealed to me. I have been very fortunate throughout my career to have benefited from the experience and expertise of many talented people and I wanted to continue to pay that back to others for as long as I can.
I have loved and valued my time at East Grinstead and all the wonderful people at the club, and it will always be a special part of my life. However the extensive travel to training and matches, the responsibility of leading the team and the time commitments of indoor and outdoor European competition were becoming increasingly harder to fit in with my career and family. I am now focused on the next challenge and doing everything I can to help Richmond Hockey Club achieve future success.”
