JUNIOR PROGRAMME

INFORMATION FOR PARENTS


Our Junior Programme delivers hockey to children from age 5 - 18.

Looking for specific information about our junior section, including training timetables, games schedules, holiday hockey camps and term dates? Everything you need is in the junior section of our website and in our Junior Handbook below.

Whether you are on a talent pathway or you are picking up a stick for the first time, there is no better place for young players to develop their game and have a great time doing it.

Our GK Academy runs on Monday from 6.30pm until 8pm.

We are an Accredited Talent Centre and run the Richmond Academy (U12 - U18) on a Monday night (6.30pm - 8pm) by invitation only.

RHC Young Leaders

At RHC we also offer opportunities for our more senior players to develop and learn new skills.

Getting involved in Coaching, Umpiring, GK Development and attending EH courses all help to improve our junior players skills on and off the pitch.

Junior Coaching and D of E

Many of our junior players coach on Sunday mornings (between 09.15 - 11.45 (session times can be selected) using it as a D of E volunteering opportunity to coach the younger age groups, teaching core skills and providing 1:1 coaching for the more technical aspects.

Safeguarding

All junior coaches must complete the Safeguarding Awareness module which can be accessed HERE

Coaches from 16 years and upwards require a DBS check which can be organised by the Club welfare officer.

Inclusion & Diversity basic awareness training can be completed HERE


Umpiring

We encourage our junior coaches to umpire it is a great skill to develop and adds to their understanding of their game. Juniors start off with small 6 a side games and progresses to 11 a side U14 & U16 matches.

There online courses provided by EH to help support a junior umpire.

Level 1 Umpiring Course

Is aimed at those looking to umpire lower level 11 a-side games for their clubs, schools or universities and is the second step on the Umpire Development Pathway. It Delivers theoretical aspects of umpiring to support individuals umpiring the 11-a-side game on a full-sized pitch and can be booked HERE

Resources

Free Training

EH delivers the following free learning to support with the delivery of safe hockey and development of coaches, resources are available through the EH Hockey Hub.

  • Coaching Junior Hockey Workshop – This workshop combines e-learning and interactive online sessions, giving practical ideas, building confidence, and providing exclusive resources to help create safe, fun and inspiring environments for young people.
  • Introduction to Hockey Coaching – This workshop gives the knowledge and fundamentals needed to start coaching in a hockey setting. This workshop is perfect for those who are just starting out and want to build their knowledge and confidence.
  • Safeguarding Awareness Module – This module provides an introduction to safeguarding for everyone involved with U18s in hockey. It helps build a strong understanding of safeguarding, what it means in practice, and the role you play in keeping everyone safe in your coaching environment. Whether you’re a coach, volunteer, parent, team captain, club official or Umpire/Official, you’ll learn the essential principles to help create a safe, positive experience for all young players.
  • Safeguarding in Hockey workshop – This workshop builds your understanding of safeguarding and teaches you how to create a safe and enjoyable space for all players.
  • Safe Hockey Guidance – England Hockey has published an important guide entitled Planning Safe Hockey. The guide is intended to be used as a checklist by anyone delivering or planning hockey activity. England Hockey strongly encourages all clubs/organisations and their members to familiarise themselves with the guide and to address any unsafe practices.
